Barnes cabinet shop closes after 53 years laying off 13 people because of lack of work

Barnes cabinet shop has closed in January 2008 because of the economic downturn. Barnes Cabinet Shop Inc. was located at 5907 Enterprise Court. Lou Barnes opened Barnes Cabinet Shop in 1955,  Kenneth Spurrier started work there in 1960. Kenneth and Cinda Spurrier bought the business in 1978 and moved to Enterprise Court in 1983.

Barnes always built quality with many cabinets sold in Clover Hill and West Hills as well as food booths in the basement of the Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C.,

58% of the work was building custom cabinets; and 15% from installing Tedd Wood, K & H, and Yorktowne cabinets.

The Big-box stores played a large part in closing the company, with Customers wanting a one-stop shop.

Spurrier was president and is now working part time for Endless Summer RV. He and wife, Judy, want to sell their Walkersville home and move to Texas to be close to their granddaughter. He would like to start a woodworking business there, including cabinet-making.
